Our aim is to tell Gypsies (Romanies or Rroms) & travellers, young & old, throughout the World about the Gospel of Christ Jesus.

We then endeavour, mainly by teaching, to build them up in the faith to ministry level. We provide teaching materials (see 'Our Resources') and teach Christian Gypsies how to share their faith with their children, to prepare the next generation for the mission field.

Rodney Smith was a Gypsy who became a Christian over a century ago. He preached to his own people, yet with little response. When asked why this was so he replied that their time had not yet come. It seems that now it has! Many believe this to be a fulfilment of Luke 14v23, for who else lives in the hedges and lanes?

Although the Gospel has been preached among the Gypsies for years, perhaps even centuries, a revival suddenly started among them about fifty years ago in Europe, which spread to Britain in the 1980s. Since then a dozen churches have been planted and about 80 men are being trained as ministers. Estimates vary, but there may be in excess of 2000 believers in Britain, but the number is rising. These new converts are naturally eager to learn about the Bible and to communicate their faith to others, but there is a shortage of ministers to teach them. Most of the work is done voluntarily because Life & Light is only a small organisation and needs Church buildings at this stage, so salaried ministers are beyond their resources. Unfortunately this limits the time that can be devoted to teaching, so in 2002 we applied for a grant to support a full time teacher. We were generously supported for three years by the Jerusalem Trust (part of the Sainsbury's family of Trusts). When we received further funding from the Anchor Trust and the Sir Halley Stewart Trust in 2005, we felt confident enough to set up the Pilgrim Bible Society, though in practice we remain part of Light & Life.

Our future vision is to find support for the work that Life & Light is involved in or associated with, even to support Christian activities from other denominations who share our vision to spread the gospel amongst Roma. There is a need for pastors and teachers to be supported, both here in the UK and abroad, and missionaries and evangelists throughout the world. There are now churches among the Gypsies in Russia, the Middle East, America, and Europe. There is also a need for equipment and buildings, both here and abroad, and we hope that in the future God will bless us with a Bible College here in the UK.
